How to Write a CV
In the job application process, the CV is the key to opening the door for an interview. Recruiters sometimes receive dozens or even hundreds of applications for a single position. To ensure that your CV stands out from the pile, here are some tips you can use to make a lasting impression.
Ensure that your CV is not only well written, but that the points are presented clearly and the layout is clean and professional. Check and double check grammar and spelling, and ensure that the most important information like work experience and qualifications are properly laid out without the recruiter having to search through the document..
It may seem like a little more work but take the time to make your CV relevant to the job to which you are applying. Remove work history that is irrelevant, and leave out qualifications that add little or no value. Instead, highlight key experience and skills that were mentioned in the job post, and adapt the details to ensure that your CV is unique for the company and the position.
Job applicants often make simple mistakes by leaving crucial information off the CV. It should include education and qualifications; work history and/or experience; related skills; achievements and hobbies; and some references, as well as personal contact information.
Be sure to mention relevant skills that can give you an edge over other candidates. Skills such as foreign language ability, advanced computer skills or certification in a specialized area should be added if they are requirements for the job. However, be careful not list too many skills that are not essential for the position as may give the impression that you are over qualified
Update your CV on a regular basis to add new skills and experience as acquired, especially if they are relevant to the job. This shows the recruiter that you are continually upgrading your skills and competencies. Include also any volunteer work or projects in which you have participated as this shows that you are not afraid to give of your time without compensation or reward.
