How to Sell / Market Yourself at an Interview
Think of the interview like a sales pitch, and you are the product. The job interview presents the perfect opportunity for you to show that no other candidate could be better for this position. Your job is to market yourself convincingly to the interviewer, highlighting your best attributes, and showing them that having you on board is the best decision for the company. Here are a few tips to market yourself during the job interview.
• Show up prepared.
Come to the interview with your own unique style. In addition to dressing appropriately, brand your resume, cover letter, and even your social media pages with your personal mark. If you are required to bring a portfolio, ensure that this is also branded. This shows that you put careful thought into the process and are serious about selling yourself to the recruiter.
• Watch body language.
A firm handshake, eye contact and smiling are all examples of body language that send a positive message to the interviewer. Displaying positive body language shows that you are interested and you will be taken more seriously.
• Ask questions.
While you are the one being interviewed, you should also have some questions of your own to broaden your knowledge of the company. Use the opportunity to ask about the job and the work you would be doing if chosen. Find out also what your duties would be like in a typical day, and try to get details of the company’s expectations during the first six months.
• Show your uniqueness.
Use the opportunity to separate yourself from other candidates by talking about relevant, yet unique skills or experience that you bring to the table. Also, try to find common ground and build rapport with your interviewer by taking note of key details. For example, you may notice that the interviewer wears the pin from a popular service club, or that the mug on the desk bears the logo from a destination where you have traveled. You can mention a similar personal experience to establish connection with the interviewer.
• Follow up after the interview.
Follow up after the interview by sending a note to thank the interviewer for the opportunity. Even if you are not successful, establishing connections on social media will keep the connection alive when another position comes up.
